New Smyrna Beach includes both mainland and barrier-island locations in southeastern Volusia County. The relationship to the river, ocean and bridges gives different parts of the city distinct geographic settings even when they share the same city name.

Historic Canal Street and Flagler Avenue provide separate shopping and dining districts on the mainland and beachside. These local centers add a cultural and commercial dimension to the city's shoreline setting, beyond the Atlantic beach itself.
