Edgewater lies south of New Smyrna Beach on the mainland side of southeastern Volusia County. Its position near the Indian River lagoon area gives it a different setting from the oceanfront portions of the neighboring beach communities.

The lagoon-side mainland forms the community's coastal backdrop, with Oak Hill continuing the regional pattern farther south. Unlike the oceanfront portions of New Smyrna Beach, this setting is associated with the inland side of the coastal waterway.
