South Sarasota occupies the mainland south of central Sarasota and west of Ridge Wood Heights. Its position is close to the coastal side of the region, across the water from Siesta Key.

Southgate lies to the northeast and Gulf Gate farther south. The community provides a specific local identity within the larger Sarasota area, separate from the barrier island and the city's downtown center.
