South Gate Ridge lies south of Southgate and west of Bee Ridge in the Sarasota mainland area. It is a separate community from both Southgate and Ridge Wood Heights, despite the similarity of their names.

The location is inland from Siesta Key, with Gulf Gate farther southwest. It belongs to the group of smaller communities on the southern side of the Sarasota urban region.
