Polk City lies in north-central Polk County, north of Auburndale and northwest of Lake Alfred. The official visitor bureau associates the city with the Green Swamp landscape, giving it a different regional context from the communities farther south.

Its location places Lakeland to the southwest and the broader northern Polk interior around it. Polk City is a separate municipality within that landscape, not simply a generic label for the county, and the town name should be distinguished from surrounding rural addresses.
