Fort Meade lies in southern Polk County, south of Bartow and east of Bradley Junction. The official visitor bureau identifies it as the county's oldest city, with numerous historic buildings and a local historical museum marking its long settlement history.

The Fort Meade Outdoor Recreation Area offers a woodland setting along the Peace River. Together, the historic town and river landscape provide a distinct introduction to this part of Polk County, away from the larger cluster of communities farther north around Lakeland and Winter Haven.
