Holmes Beach occupies the central portion of Anna Maria Island between Anna Maria and Bradenton Beach. Its Gulf shoreline and island streets give it a coastal setting separate from the mainland communities across the water.

Manatee Beach is a recognizable public beach destination in the area. The wider island is made up of several municipalities, so Holmes Beach has its own local identity within the larger Anna Maria Island name.
