Port Charlotte occupies a broad mainland area on the northern side of Charlotte Harbor. It lies west of the Charlotte Harbor community and across the Peace River from Punta Gorda, making the water a central feature of the regional geography.

The community extends inland as well as toward the harbor. As a result, the Port Charlotte name describes a wider range of locations than a single waterfront neighborhood or compact town-center district.
